MUMBLES COASTAL PROTECTION SCHEME
Knelston Primary
History of Mumbles Evolving Landmarks Through the Ages: From the Past to the Vibrant Present
Workshop Date - 20th November 2023
The session with Knelston delved deep into maritime elements, with a primary focus on the lighthouse, lifeboat, and station, opening up a discourse on the lifeboat station's proximity to Horton and its interconnectedness with Mumbles. The discussion further extended to a poignant exploration of the lifeboat disaster, providing a profound understanding of the risks and challenges involved in coastal rescue operations.

This day helped the students learn more about coastal geography and the area's history. It also connected different subjects like science, history, art, literature, and music. The session showed how hands-on learning can make education thorough and unforgettable. This practical approach not only reinforced theoretical knowledge but also enhanced their spatial understanding of these critical coastal structures.
The students explored how the sea and shoreline inspire art and writing. They were asked to use their creativity to research and write story poems inspired by Viking landmarks and place names like Skysea. This way, they created a combination of historical information and imagination in their work.

To make learning more fun and engaging, the class invited folk musician Andy Tamlyn Jones. With his music, he made the coastal stories come alive, adding feelings and richness to our conversation. The students joined in by writing lyrics that captured the essence of the sea, sailing, and the coastguard, blending music and maritime tales together.
